Mopti, a city of 100,000, is centrally located and has a good hotel. We stayed here three times while coming from and going to other places. Mopti itself is an interesting place. There is an active port, a mosque, and, across the Niger River, small fishing villages.

On one of our visits we stopped by the mosque in early morning. The mosque dates to 1935. To my eye, its colors and proportions are superior to the better-known and larger mosque in Djenne, from which it was modeled. On another visit we hired a pinasse to take us to the Bozo fishing villages across the Niger. By this time we were used to seeing people live with a high degree of self-sufficiency, but we were still surprised to see a man making nails.
